Abstract

Self-medication is a behavior carried out by anyone who decides to take medication independently and is often unaware of the potential risks to their health. Another relevant aspect is that, in addition to these factors, this behavior is observed among students in healthcare programs. In view of the poisoning and health problems that self-medication may cause, especially among healthcare students, since they are taught and instructed on the effects of this practice during their undergraduate course, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of self-medication among nursing students at a private university. The research is a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. To quantify the research, an 11-question questionnaire was administered to 103 nursing students. As a result, self-medication was considered an option for 93 nursing students, the majority of whom were female, aged between 18 and 20, covered by medical insurance, and aware of possible health risks, even after accessing the directions. The clinical conditions that preceded self-medication mainly included headaches, colds/flu and muscle pain. There was a preference for medicines that had already been used, especially analgesics, anti-inflammatories, antipyretics, and muscle relaxants. It is concluded that nursing students have served as an example to society by becoming healthcare professionals, and they are expected to be able to guide and inform patients about the risks of self-medication and the importance of seeing a qualified professional.
