Abstract

The Ponte Pensa Stream sub-basin is located in one of the most heavily deforested landscapes of the Atlantic Forest in the northwestern region of São Paulo State, Brazil, and knowledge of its mammalian fauna remains limited. Objective: To inventory medium- and large-bodied mammals at the mouth of the Ponte Pensa Stream and determine the occurrence of threatened species. Methods: Four HC-900A camera traps were installed in two privately owned forest fragments in the municipalities of Santa Fé do Sul and Rubinéia, São Paulo State, Brazil, for 30 days, totaling 120 camera-days. Detection activity was expressed as the number of records per 100 camera-days. Results: Fourteen species were recorded, including 11 native species and three exotic or domestic species. Four species are listed as threatened in the state of São Paulo: Puma concolor, Leopardus pardalis, Myrmecophaga tridactyla, and Tapirus terrestris. Cerdocyon thous, Dasyprocta azarae, and Euphractus sexcinctus exhibited the highest recording rates. Conclusion: The forest fragments support important components of the regional mammalian fauna, including threatened species. However, the short sampling period and the presence of exotic species warrant caution in interpreting the findings and reinforce the need for continued monitoring, habitat restoration, and landscape connectivity.
